Forget the sales pitches.  Take a break and check out some images from our neck of the woods that we like.  We've provided a little background info. on each one to help you get an idea of what you're seeing.  If you would like a large version of any of these photos, just email us and we'll get you one.  Enjoy!

If you're a photography hack like me, check back often.  I'll post any new "gems" as I get them!

Our leadoff image, this is a view behind our shop of the old Ikenberry farm with one of those blue ridges in the distance.

Red sky morning, sailors take warning.

This image is from a recent hike on the Rock Castle Gorge trail off the Blue Ridge Parkway near Floyd, VA.  This trail passes through a wonderful grove of tall, straight poplars and silver birches.  And the best part, we had just come from an incredibly crowded parkway filled with Mabry Mill visitors and pick-nickers.  No one seemed to know about this trail.  Email us and we'll tell you about it!

This image is literally from our back yard.  I caught this one at our neighboring pond as the fall sun set.

This image is from several years ago.  It's from Clingman's Dome in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.  It was a gray, crappy day, but something about this photo has always worked for me.  How about you?

Here's the most photographed object on the Blue Ridge Parkway.  It's Mabry's Mill, just down the road from us in Patrick County, VA.  It's really popular this time of year.  There are always demonstrations going on and you can even buy flour, corn meal and grits ground with the water wheel.

This image is from the Blue Ridge Parkway near the Peaks of Otter on one of those sparkling late summer days that you're glad you got out for a drive.

This image is from the same area as the above image, just a little later in the day.  What struck me here is the lonely pine which stood for years looking over that valley.  Now it's likely succumbed to the southern pine beetle as have many pine trees along the parkway.  But, this pine still retains some of it's dignity, staying at it's post.

This is a view of Flat Top Mountain, and the lodge at the Peaks of Otter on the Blue Ridge Parkway.  Otter Lake is in the foreground.  Notice the colors just starting to hint in the trees.

Otter Lake again later in the day.  Sharp Top is rising to the right of the image.  Note the moon!

This is a little earlier in the summer at one of my and my kid's favorite places - Philpott Lake.  Located in our home county, Philpott is an Army Corps of Engineering lake with no commerical development.  This shot is from our canoe which is delightful up there until the fishing boats zoom by.  Oh well, you take what you can get.

OK, so I thought these cows were pretty cool.  It helps to know where they are.  This is a high mountain knoll in the Rocky Knob Recreation Area on the Blue Ridge Parkway.  Part of one of the trails goes through this field and provides fantastic views of the surrounding countryside.

One of my favorite pictures, this is from Philpott Lake in our home county of Franklin.  We were camping at Horseshoe Point Campground, and I awoke quite early and rolled out of the tent.  It was a beautiful morning, so I grabbed my camera and scrambled down the wooded bank to the shoreline.  I thought the mist on the water was really captivating with the sunlight just breaking over the hill behind.  Then, as if on cue, this canoe emerged from around a point to my left.  As they moved silently through the water, I waited until what I thought was the right spot and took a couple of shots, hoping the camera settings were right.  Let's just say I was pretty tickled once I got to the computer.  (This is actually my desktop)

And don't forget our security system, Ben the beagle!
